Qualche anno fa, nel corso di un lavoro per Rai International, io e Michele Mezza decidemmo di usare Google trends in inglese per avere informazioni, non diversamente reperibili, su cosa pensavano di noi gli americani nei principali settori del made in Italy. Capimmo così che noi per gli americani eravamo soltanto italian style, cucina e cultura. Per tutto il resto contavamo poco più di zero. I grafici che ricavammo da quei dati erano impressionanti ed anche la mole delle news testimoniava, inequivocabilmente, questo dati di fatto.
Ci fu in Rai chi ritenne quel lavoro poco apprezzabile ma noi fummo molto soddisfatti di quello che ottenemmo perché queste "notizie" non le da nessuno con tanta accuratezza ed eloquenza.
Ricordo, per quei pochi lettori che non sanno come funziona Google trends, che questo programma di rete si basa sulle query che vengono fatte da tutti i naviganti che usano Google e restituisce informazioni accurate anche città per città, regione per regione e quant'altro.
Già allora, discutendo tra di noi, ci sembrò opportuno estendere questo vero e proprio strumento di data mining ad altri campi (la politica, la ricerca di mercato, ecc. ecc.) ma poi lo abbiamo lasciato sullo sfondo presi da altro.
Vedo oggi sul Sole 24 ore online che un gruppo di ricercatori inglesi, partendo da considerazione analoghe alle nostre ha scelto di applicare la potenza di Google trends alla finanza, o meglio, all'investimento finanziario.
Ne è venuto fuori che, valuando i dati risultanti dalle parole chiavi tipiche degli investimenti finanziari, si poteva inferire con probabilità superiore all'80% le tendenze dei mercati finanziari stessi. Chi avesse gestito i propri investimenti seguendo questo tipo di valutazione avrebbe ottenuto in 7 anni un profitto del 326% contro il 16% nello stesso periodo di tempo contro "il 16% della strategia buy and hold, cioè quella da cassettista che consiste nel comprare il Dow Jones nel 2004 e venderlo sette anni dopo".
In fondo è semplice... Quando la massa delle ricerche aumenta vuol dire che gli investitori sono preoccupati e, dunque, il mercato cadrà mentre quando avviene il contrario è ragionevole prevedere l'esatto contrario.
Sono queste le cosiddette sentimental news, cioè le notizie emotive che nascono dall'attività molecolare degli utenti di Google.
Si conferma, per l'ennesima volta, che il data mining è la chiave per la scienza inferenziale del tempo nostro: ci sono notizie nascoste nei grandi dati, notizie che fanno la differenza in tutti i campi.
Lo sapevamo da tempo ma questa conferma ci spinge a riaprire l'attenzione per trovare nuove soluzioni e possibilità.
